Jones Snowboards is a brand new company (right up Neverbored’s alley!) started by big mountain legend Jeremy Jones. So it makes sense that Jones has their own line of splitboards, tapered pow machines, and bombardier freestyle twins. They are part of a growing movement in the snowboarding industry that focuses on backcountry exploration, which includes anywhere there is no lift service. That means you can access the best snow available, have no crowds to deal with, and have the freedom to do whatever you please in a magical world. There’s the motivation.
The other side to this coin is that you need to be willing and able to carry yourself and all your gear up that hill. Hence the splitboard, which makes traveling across deep snow a breeze by transforming your board into two fat skies. When you get to the top of your line you simply lock the two halves of the board back together, slide your binders on and you’re ready to shred.
But there will be places along your route where you need to carry your board. Any decent line worth hiking up has steep sections, where even the skins on your splitboard will not be able to grip. You will need a backpack that is specifically designed for backcountry travel to carry extra clothing, food, water and avalanche equipment (especially in the western states) poles, and your snowboard. No problem, Jones is making some incredible packs for those of us who earn our turns.
When we went to the SIA Snowsports trade show in Denver last January we were already planning to carry splitboards and other backcountry gear. Jones was top on our list, since I already owned the Jones Solution. In the Jones Snowboards area they had a corner dedicated to their backpacks. Having used Black Diamond, Wild Things and Mammut packs for years my standards are quite high. I didn’t think Jones would measure up for a fledgling company. I was wrong.
Jeremy has obviously devoted a great amount of time making sure Jones’ packs meet the highest standard for backcountry travel. The detail and hardiness of these packs is top notch. They are light as a feather to boot! The Jones backpacks are right up there in quality and durability with the best in the industry. They are well laid out with easy access to avy gear up front and water storage with an insulated hose strap in the back. The 18L is streamlined perfectly for sidecountry outings and pow days at your favorite resort. The 30L has all the room you need for an overnighter at the hut or your own personal snow cave.
I also love the beefy, reinforced snowboard carry system that allows you to carry your board vertically or sideways. The carry system also allows you to carry your board A-Frame style like skis for quick boot packing ascents. In addition, the pack has the perfect number and placement of compression straps for securing your gear and mounting your touring poles and ice axe.
Neverbored is really psyched to be carrying Jones Snowboards’ backpacks this winter. These packs will be awesome for anyone looking for a bomb-proof, lifetime-lasting backcountry pack or a great pack for the ski area.
